Information for Patients
- The Retreat accepts inpatient admissions 365-days a year. To arrange an admission call 802-258-3700.
- Outpatient services are generally available Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Certain outpatient programs may open earlier and/or run later.
- Insurance cards. Please be ready to provide your insurance cards and other pertinent information. If you are receiving outpatient care you will be required to provide your co-pay before each visit.
- Clothing. If staying for inpatient treatment, please bring 2- 3 days of clothing and something to sleep in. There are washing machines available on units as well as hypoallergenic laundry soap. Do not bring any clothing with strings, ties, laces, or belts. These include sweatpants with drawstrings, scarves, belts made of leather, cloth, or metal, and laced shoes.
- Toiletries. Patients will be provided with basic hypoallergenic hygiene products. Some items may be evaluated based on an individual's case.
- Personal Items. Examples include eyeglasses, contact lenses, canes, dentures, etc. Patients are advised to leave valuables, including jewelry, at home and not to carry more than $10 in cash. Cameras are not allowed on the units.
In addition to glass containers and items containing alcohol, patients are not permitted to bring computers, cell phones, and other handheld devices.
Cell phones are not permitted on inpatient units for the privacy and safety of our patients. There are telephones on each unit. We encouraged patients to continue to have healthy communication with supports outside of the Brattleboro Retreat. We invite you to write these numbers down for easy access.
Jewelry is also prohibited. As mentioned earlier, do not bring any type of clothing that has ties, strings, or belts. These include scarves, sweatpants with drawstrings, laced shoes, and belts made of leather, cloth, or metal. Clothing that has vulgar or harmful words or graphics will not be allowed on the unit.
Specific programs may have additional prohibitions based on the nature of their services. Please ask an admissions coordinator for more information.
Please keep in mind that different programs at the Brattleboro Retreat have different policies regarding visiting hours. Please check with the appropriate nurse manager or charge nurse if you have questions. All visitors to inpatient units will be required to pass through metal detection prior to visiting.
The Brattleboro Retreat is a tobacco free campus. Patients, staff, and visitors (including volunteers, vendors, contract workers, etc.) are prohibited from using tobacco products anywhere inside Retreat buildings or on the grounds of the Brattleboro Retreat.
If you are a patient being admitted to a Retreat program you will be asked about your tobacco use and can request nicotine replacement therapy. This information will be shared with your treatment team. If necessary, we will work with you to help you feel comfortable without tobacco.
People making short visits to the Retreat (outpatients, family members, guests, etc.) are asked to refrain from all tobacco use as well.
- Telephones are available on every program for both local and long distance calls. Calls are free of charge.
- Patients can send and receive mail. Any letters and packages sent by U.S. mail are delivered to and picked up from inpatient units on a daily basis. All packages must be opened in front of staff.
- Cell phones are not permitted on inpatient units for the privacy and safety of our patients.
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily on the inpatient units.
- Patients have access to snacks and drinks on their unit.
